Ulsan Hyundai FC will tread with caution when they host Yokohama F. Marinos in the first leg of the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 East semi-final on Wednesday.

Korea Republic’s Ulsan are seeking a third title while Japan’s Marinos are appearing in the semi-finals for the first time.

Ulsan, continental champions in 2012 and 2020, will head into the tie having rediscovered their form after a slow start to the K League 1 season.

Two wins on the trot have pushed Hong Myung-bo’s side within two points of league leaders Pohang Steelers and the head coach will expect his side to maintain their form against Marinos.

While Ulsan have won five of their seven AFC Champions League knockout stage games against Japanese opponents, this will be their first meeting with Marinos.

Ulsan’s potent strikeforce has been at its best but defender Seol Young-woo has played his part as well, netting twice in his last four AFC Champions League appearances.

While the semi-finals may be uncharted territory for Marinos, they will be confident of their chances after an impressive knockout stage campaign so far.

Their form in the J1 League has been decent, with Harry Kewell’s side only four points behind leaders Cerezo Osaka eight matches into the season.

Kewell, who replaced compatriot Kevin Muscat and was thrust straight into Marinos’ AFC Champions League campaign, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of his players and the Australian will expect a fighting performance to counter Ulsan’s home ground advantage.

Anderson Lopes (5 goals) and Elber (3) have been at the forefront of Marinos’ charge, and the Brazilians will again be the focal points for the Japanese side.
