The FIFA Series 2024™ has concluded after 24 matches, with Central African Republic, Guinea, Croatia and Guyana just four of the teams to have enjoyed memorable victories across five days of closely contested fixtures.
The FIFA Series consisted of international friendly matches contested by national teams from different confederations, who do not normally have the opportunity to play each other.
The pilot edition featured sides representing 24 FIFA Member Associations (MAs) playing in five countries – Algeria, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka – across three continents, with all six confederations represented.
Central African Republic scored 10 goals across their two games, defeating Bhutan 6-0 and following that up with a 4-0 win against Papua New Guinea in Sri Lanka. Guinea, meanwhile, recorded 6-0 and 5-1 triumphs over Vanuatu and Bermuda, respectively, in Saudi Arabia.
Cabo Verde were the other nation to have a perfect record of two wins from two as they collected a pair of 1-0 victories, against Guyana and Equatorial Guinea, also in Saudi Arabia.
It was a six-goal thriller in Algiers to close out an impressive debut FIFA Series showing for the hosts. After notching a late win against Bolivia last week, the lead changed hands three times before Algeria and South Africa finally settled for a 3-3 draw, with Yassine Benzia’s brace taking his tally to the series to three.
Bolivia, off the back of that late loss to Algeria, closed out their participation with a gritty win over Andorra thanks to Ramiro Vaca’s early header at the near post. The European side had drawn their opening fixture with South Africa as Cucu netted after just six minutes before Elias Mokwana equalised.
