Christian Wuck will become coach of the Germany women’s national team following this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, the DFB has announced.
Interim coach Horst Hrubesch will continue to lead the side up to and including the Olympic competition, which takes place in France from 25 July to 10 August.
Wuck guided Germany men’s U-17 side to glory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023™. The 50-year-old has been with the DFB for more than a decade and has alternated as coach between the men’s U-15 and U-17 age groups.
It has also been announced Maren Meinert, who was part of Germany’s 2003 Women’s World Cup-winning squad, will be part of Wuck’s coaching staff.
“I consider it a great honour to take on this role,” said Wuck, who will remain in his current position as U-15 coach until after the Olympics. “When the enquiry came, I didn’t hesitate for long: coaching this team, developing the existing individual quality of the players and making the team fit for success in the future is one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football. It makes me proud that I will shape this path after the Olympics. Until then, let’s all keep our fingers crossed for Horst and his coaching team to be successful at the European qualifiers and then the Olympic Games.”
Bernd Neuendorf, DFB President, added: “Christian has proven he can develop personalities and mould teams into a cohesive unit. I am convinced that he is the right person to lead our team into the future after the Olympics.”
