The competition’s biggest-ever quarter-final win – Brazil’s 12-1 thrashing of Canada in 2006 – appeared under threat, but Japan bravely battled back with four unanswered goals.

Catarino then ended hopes of a comeback and made Brazil the first team to register 400 goals in the competiton.

Brazil will now face the IR Iran-United Arab Emirates victors on Saturday with a final place at stake.
