Stanley Ratifo’s everyday life with 1. CfR Pforzheim in Germany’s fifth tier, the Oberliga Baden-Wurttemberg, usually involves taking on the likes of SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach and FSV 08 Bietigheim-Bissingen. Yet when he pulls on Mozambique’s national jersey for the group stage of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, the striker will face global stars such as Mohamed Salah and the Ayew brothers.

In an interview with FIFA.com, the 29-year-old German-born forward from Halle provided an insight into the differences between his two footballing worlds. Having already won more than 20 international caps, Ratifo also gave his thoughts on his team’s chances of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 26™ and how they might fare at the African Cup of Nations 2023.

Stanley, you’re currently preparing to take part in your first major international tournament after being named in the Mozambique squad for the AFCON. How do you feel on the eve of the tournament – proud, nervous, fired up?

Stanley Ratifo: Although I’m feeling quite a lot of things, I haven’t noticed any nerves so far. I’m obviously motivated to do well, as I get a chance to test myself against all kinds of superstars on the international stage. I can’t wait to get started.

You’re currently in the middle of a national team training camp. What’s the mood like within the squad and what final few areas of improvement have you been working on?

The mood within the team is positive. We’re a relaxed group who stick together – both on and off the pitch. We’re working on a few specific drills to make sure we work well as a team during the tournament.
