Filipe Luis discusses hanging up his boots, his desire to win the FIFA World Cup as a coach and the influence Diego Simeone had on him.

Holidays and retiring in luxury are the last things on Filipe Luis’s mind right now. Having just hung up his boots at the age of 38, the former left-back is already studying hard for his coaching badges as 2024 gets under way.

The Brazilian has achieved a lot in the last 20 years, winning two league titles in Brazil and one each in Spain and England, not to mention the UEFA Europa League with Atletico Madrid and two Copa Libertadores crowns with Flamengo. As he explained, however, there were some that got away, including the FIFA World Cup™.

“My dream now as a coach is to win the things I didn’t as a player,” he told FIFA. “I have to face reality first, though, and that involves becoming a coach in the first place.

“I’m not one yet, and I need to study, prepare, get organised, grow, and then get out there on the market and be one of the best. I’ve got a long road ahead of me, but I’m confident I can get there.”
