Poland were on the cusp of reaching a first FIFA Futsal World Cup™ since 1992. They required only a draw at home to Ukraine, whom they came from two goals down to beat in the teams’ first meeting, to seal qualification.
Ukraine nevertheless ripped up their hosts’ script in Lodz to finish top of Group B and make the global finals for the fifth time in six attempts. Poland’s consolation is that they finished as one of the four best runners-up in European qualifying, and will consequently go into April 2024’s elite-round play-offs, which offer two tickets to Uzbekistan 2024.
Goals from Danyil Abakshyn and Petro Shoturma put Ukraine firmly in command, before an Ihor Korsun double seemingly put the game to bed. Pawel Kaniewski hit a quick-fire brace of his own to haul Poland back into the contest, but the visitors held on to win 5-3.
The Futsal World Cup will begin in September. Ukraine joined France, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Uzbekistan in its field.
