The biggest talking point was Manchester City’s inclusion of Kevin De Bruyne, who hasn’t featured since the opening day of the Premier League season in August. Following surgery on a hamstring injury, the Belgian playmaker targeted Saudi Arabia 2023, but he recently said he hoped to return in early 2024.

Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland, who are also on the shortlist for The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2023 award, will also represent the UEFA Champions League holders at the tournament.

There was also positive news for Fluminense. First-choice right-back Samuel Xavier, who limped off in tears against Sao Paulo two weeks ago, has recovered from a knee injury to secure a seat on the plane. Fernando Diniz, who doubles up as the Brazil coach, will also have key players such as Real Madrid legend Marcelo, 22-year-old Seleção midfielder Andre, Colombia winger Jhon Arias and goal machine German Cano at his disposal.
