Uzbekistan 2024 is now just 2 days away
Would anyone ever stop Brazil? They had netted 55 goals in only eight games (6.88 per game) to win a third straight FIFA Futsal World Cup™, and at the fourth edition, the great Manoel Tobias was accompanied by rising stars Falcao, Lenisio and Schumacher. Together, they helped the Seleção strike 75 goals in just seven games (10.71 per game) to saunter into the final.
Spain had scored less than half that total to reach a second successive decider. Nobody gave them much of a hope of ending Brazil’s rule, but they led twice inside El Domo de la Zona 13 in Guatemala City. Brazil nevertheless found equalisers through Anderson and Manoel Tobias wonder goals, before Vander fired them in front with five minutes remaining.
Thereafter, Javi Lozano’s troops defended heroically and scored twice without reply through Javi Rodriguez to spark crazy celebrations.
“It was an indescribable feeling,” said Rodriguez. “We’d visualised it over and over in our heads, but when we actually beat Brazil, this unstoppable Brazil team, it was the most insane feeling ever.”
“I think it was an exceptional performance,” said Lozano. “It needed to be because that Brazil side was something else. It was a huge breakthrough not just for Spain, but for futsal.”
Luis Amado, who was on the bench injured, elaborated: “In that era Brazil were unstoppable. The most important thing was winning and marking a new era of futsal in Spain and making it a bigger sport.”
