Flu goalkeeper Fabio slipped, Alan Patrick’s corner flew over him to the back post, and Gabriel Mercado nodded it home. Fluminense dominated possession thereafter, but Internacional had the better opportunities. Fabio did well to dive at the feet of Enner Valencia, who was a constant threat, and smother the ball. The Ecuador striker then spurned two gilt-edged chances – one with a close-range header and the other when he raced clean through. Fernando Diniz’s side punished that profligacy. After 81 minutes, Cano slipped John Kennedy through and he cannily dinked the ball over Sergio Rochet and home. Six minutes later Flu were ahead. Yony Gonzalez’s pass made it to Cano, whose first-time finish found the target. It was the Argentinian’s 12th goal in 11 appearances in the Libertadores 2023. Inter pushed for an equaliser, but Fabio came to Flu’s rescue with a fine save from a stoppage-time Luiz Adriano effort.

Fluminense produced an exceptional late comeback at Internacional to reach their first Copa Libertadores final in 15 years.
